Abstract

PURPOSE:To generate high output power and obtain low fuel consumption of an engine throughout its total operating range, by providing a primary intake port, for generating a high swirl, and a secondary intake port, of smaller diameter than said primary intake port and having a flow line control valve opened at a high load range in the upstream, in the vicinity of a spark plug. CONSTITUTION:A high swirl generating primary intake port 4 is opened in the vicinity of a spark plug 3 in a combustion chamber 2, an exhaust port 5 is opened to a face-to-face position to the port 4. Further in the vicinity of the above described port 4, there is provided a secondary intake port 6 in diameter smaller than that of the port 4 and generating a swirl in the same direction as the port 4, and a flow line control valve 9 opened at a high load range is further provided in the upstream of the port 6. Then intake valves 7, 8 are provided respectively in each of said intake ports 4, 6. In this way, a new mixture can be sucked into the combustion chamber 2 only from the primary intake port 4 to generate a high swirl in a low speed low load range. On the contrary, the new mixture can be sucked also from the secondary intake port 6 to fully produce a swirl and obtain high suction efficiency at the time of high speed and high load.
