Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable proper correction of EGR amount particularly when an engine is driven under a partial load so as to reduce the negative operation of the engine by providing a pair of EGR valves within an EGR passage whose opening timings are set differently. CONSTITUTION:In an internal combustion engine, an intake pipe 10 and an exhaust pipe 32 are communicated with each other through an EGR intake pipe 31, which enables a recirculation of a part of exhaust gas into the intake pipe 10 so as to reduce the amount of NOx contained in the exhaust gas. The intake pipe 10 is provided with an intake control valve 11 which comprises a rotary valve cooperating with an accel pedal not shown. The EGR pipe 31 is provided with the first and the second EGR rotary valve 11A and 11B arranged in series to each other whose opening timings are set differently. These two valves cooperates with the control valve 11 to open or close so that the EGR amount can be increased corresponding to an increase of the mixture amount or decreased to zero when the control valve 11 is near its fully opened position.
