Abstract

PURPOSE: To cause swirl of returned combustion gas and enhance combustion efficiency, by providing a pair of exhaust valve ports, making the ports relatively small, enabling the eccentric positioning of the ports to the peripheral side of the wall of a combustion chamber and making exhaust valves different in opening time from each other.
CONSTITUTION: A pair of intake valve ports 2, 3 and a pair of exhaust valve ports 9, 10, which communicate with an intake passage 4 and an exhaust passage 13 respectively, are provided in the wall 1 of a combustion chamber in a cylinder. The valve ports 2, 3, 9, 10 are opened and closed by intake valves 7, 8 and exhaust valves 14, 15 respectively. The exhaust valve ports 9, 10 communicate with a single exhaust passage 13 through exhaust passages 11, 12. One exhaust passage 12 is oriented eccentrically to the combustion chamber. A swirl causing guide wall 16 shaped as an arc along the exhaust valve port 10 is protruded on the wall 1 of the combustion chamber. The exhaust valves 14, 15 are so set that the exhaust valve 14 is opened first and the other exhaust valve 15 is then opened. The opening time of at least one of the exhaust valves 14, 15 is overlapped with that of the intake valves 7, 8.
