Abstract
895,554 Valves; charging engines; engines using alternative fuels. BUCHI, A. J. Feb. 23, 1961, No. 6757/61. Classes 7(2) and 7(6). A four-stroke gas engine has at least three poppet valves, two of which are coaxial inlet valves 2, 3, Fig. 1, and the other is an outlet valve 1; the outer inlet valve 3 has its seat 3b on the cylinder head and the inner inlet valve 2 has its seat 2b on the outer valve. A duct 5, Fig. 2, feeds gaseous fuel to the valve 2 and supercharging and scavenging air is fed to the valve 3 through a duct 6. The valve return springs are arranged to press the valve head 2a on to the seat 1b with increased spring force during scavenging. The open period of the air inlet valve is arranged to overlap that of the outlet valve, whilst the gaseous fuel inlet valve is closed, so that the cylinder is scavenged with pure air. Fuel may be ignited either by injection of ignition fuel through a nozzle D or by a spark plug C. The inner and outer inlet valve may be arranged to control the air and gaseous fuel respectively. In another embodiment two coaxial pairs of inlet valves and two single outlet valves may serve each cylinder. In Fig. 5, a pipeline 4<SP>1</SP> leads exhaust gas to drive a turbo-supercharger T which supplies air through a pipeline 6<SP>1</SP> to the duct 6. The gas engine may be converted for operation as an injection engine by provision of a change-over or cut-off device in the supply line to the duct 5.
