[Also in Group XXVII] An exhaust valve guide 3 of an internalcombustion engine projects into the exhaust conduit and has an annular recess 8, connected by bores 9 to the part of the conduit around the guide, which reduces gas leakage along the guide. The flow of gases past the guide causes a drop in pressure in chamber 8 whereby leakage past the chamber is prevented.
