Abstract
885,985. Cooling valves; cylinder heads. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Oct. 20, 1960, No. 36043/60. Classes 7(2) and 7(6). An exhaust valve cooling means comprises a passage way 24, 25, Fig. 1, entirely within a cylinder head 10, through which a portion of the intake air passing through an intake valve chamber 21 is ducted to an exhaust valve chamber 22. Reversal of gas flow is prevented by a check valve 30, loosely positioned in chamber 26, or in a modification, Fig. 2, by an annular valve stem projection 33 which enters and closes a sleeve 34 when the valve 12 is open. Intake air which is heated by the exhaust valve can be directed with the exhaust gases to the turbine of a supercharger.
