Abstract

1330032 Valves COUNTY COMMERCIAL CARS Ltd 28 March 1972 [30 March 1971] 8146/71 Heading F1B I. C. engine having a poppet-type inlet valve which seats in the engine housing and in which there is provided in one of the two seating surfaces on the valve and the housing an inlet opening for fuel, which opening is closed by the surfaces mating together when the valve is closed and open when the valve is open, means being provided to supply fuel to the opening. The valve seating is formed on a liner p and has a ring of holes o therein, which lead to an annular chamber f to which fuel is supplied through an inlet i. The liner is heated by an electric element "e" for starting and by an exhaust gas circulation passage "x" when the engine is running. Fuel passes through the holes o and to the engine cylinders for as long as the valve is open. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the fuel emerges from passages l 1 formed in the valve head and stem. The lower part of the valve stem carries a sleeve v 1 v 2 which runs in a chamber m 1 : As the valve opens, the larger diameter part v 2 of the sleeve enters the chamber and pumps fuel through passages s 1 into the passage t 1 . Fuel enters the chamber past a non- return valve n 1 . A non-return valve may also be fitted in the valve head. Fig. 5 shows a mechanism for varying the valve lift and consists of a lever 49, pivoted at 50 on a block 80 which can be moved along a guide rod 51 by a crank 53 and lever 52. The lever 49 is oscillated by a cam 54 and the valve stem bears on a shoe 56 which rests on the lever.
