Abstract

791,388. Fuel-injection compression-ignition engines. RICARDO & CO., ENGINEERS (1927), Ltd. June 1, 1956, No. 16948/56.Addition to 767,145. Class 7(3) In a reciprocating internal combustion engine of the liquid fuel injection compression ignition type comprising a cylinder 1 the outer end of which is closed by a cylinder head containing inlet and exhaust ports 3, 4 controlled by valves of the poppet type with a fuel injection device also mounted in the cylinder head and disposed with its axis substantially on the axis of the cylinder bore and a piston 10 arranged to reciprocate within the cylinder and having formed in the centre of its crown a combustion pocket 13 of circular .cross-section in planes normal to the cylinder axis so that its axis is coincident with that of the injection device and having its mouth 12 which opens through the face of the crown of smaller diameter than its inner part, the axes of the poppet valves lie on a diameter of the cylinder bore or on a line lying parallel and near to such diameter, the poppet valves lie wholly within the projected area of the cylinder bore and the fuel injection device is of the kind comprising an injector body containing a fuel chamber 17 having a fuel inlet passage 16 leading into it a nozzle part closing the end of the fuel chamber adjacent to the combustion pocket and having formed therein a nozzle passage which opens into the cylinder bore and has a part 20 adjacent to the bore which is of larger diameter than a part 19 more remote from the bore with a valve seating formed between the two parts referred to and a valve member having a stem part 22 which is acted upon by a spring 28 and lies partly within the fuel chamber and is formed to leave a fuel passage between it and the wall of the nozzle passage and terminates in a head 25 lying in the part of the nozzle passage adjacent to the cylinder bore and formed for engagement with the seating under the action of the spring, the head being also provided with a projection 26 arranged to lie and move within the larger diameter part of the nozzle passage and to co-operate with the wall thereof to determine the jet form which the fuel issuing through the valve after the latter has been opened by the pressure of fuel thereon will be caused to take, and a central deflector 33 carried by the piston within the combustion pocket and disposed and formed so that the fuel issuing from the nozzle during the injection period impinges thereon and is deflected thereby into the parts of the combustion pocket of larger diameter. The cylinder and head are air cooled the head including cooling air passages 34, 36. The invention is also applicable to liquid cooled engines, Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Specification 720,644 is referred to.
