Abstract

521,341. Oil engines. WEBER, E. M. Aug. 16, 1938, Nos. 24163, 24164, and 24165. Convention dates, Sept. 24, 1937, March 12, 1938, and July 4, 1938. [Class 7 (iii)] In an engine in which part of the combustion space is located in a chamber separated from the cylinder space by a narrow passage, a fuel injection nozzle is mounted in the cylinder head and lies adjacent the opening of the passage. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the main supply of fuel is delivered through a nozzle 10 into a combustion space 1 in the cylinder and through a passage 3 which opens tangentially into a spherical combustion space 2. Supplementary fuel may be delivered to the chamber 2 through a nozzle 9. The space 1 may be formed by two symmetrical recesses 11, 12, in the piston or cylinder head, partly separated by a rib 7 opposite the passage 3 which may contain a cup-shaped insert having apertures adjacent the space 1, the apertures being arranged to deflect the gases issuing from the space 2 away from the nozzle tip. If two nozzles are used one may deliver fuel before the other. Two inlet and two exhaust valves may be provided in the cylinder head. In a modified construction the chamber 1 is spherical and is located partly in the piston and partly in the cylinder head. In a further construction the shaped chamber 1, is omitted, the main combustion space lying between a plain piston face and the cylinder head. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a construction in which both chambers 1, 2 are in the cylinder head. The upper part of the chamber 1 and the lower part of the chamber 2 are formed in a plug which is held in the cylinder head by a clamping member bearing against an insert in which the top part of the chamber 2 is formed. An air space is formed above the chamber 2. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
