Abstract

383,993. Oil engines. SOC. ANON. A. SAURER, Arbon, Switzerland. Aug. 31, 1931, No. 24415. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1930. [Class 7 (iii).] In a compression ignition engine working either on a two-stroke or a four-stroke cycle, both the jet or jets of air 14, issuing from an air pocket 10 through a throttled opening or openings 12, and a fuel jet 13 are directed towards a common point on a hot part of the engine, preferably the piston. The combustion chamber is formed by a recess 8 on the cylinder head and by a depression 4 in the crown of the piston. In a modified construction, the air pocket 10 is located in the cylinder head, the depression in the piston being pear-shape in plan. In either arrangement the air pocket may be water cooled or uncooled. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes a modification shown in Fig. 5 (Cancelled) in which two vertical pockets 22 provide opposed air streams through converging passages 23. Fig. 10 (Cancelled) shows a further modification in which a fuel injector delivers two downwardly inclined jets 36, 36 which meet opposed and converging air streams 39, 41 and 38, 40 near the extremities of an elliptical depression 35 in the piston. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
