Abstract

534,688. Oil engines. HOPKINS, V. H. F., and ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH SECURITIES CO., Ltd. June 13, 1939, No. 17311. (Class (iii)] In an engine having a combustion chamber 15 formed by an open, part-spherical cavity in the engine piston, fuel is injected by one or more nozzles 20 from the side of the cylinder or cylinder head directly into the chamber and in the general direction of movement of the air which is in whirling motion, the direction of the fuel spray being such as to cut the horizontal diameter d of the chamber at a distance of between .175d and .375d from one end, and the the vertical axis h of the chamber at a distance of between .2h and .5h from the bottom. The lower face 16 of the exhaust valve 10 forming one boundary of the chamber, may be concave. The ratio of the height h to the diameter d is preferably between 1:2.5 and 1:1.5. Swirling motion is imparted to the entering air by a tangential arrangement of the air-inlet ports in the cylinder liner and by deflector vanes or suitably shaped passages cast in the cylinder block. The fuel is injected through a groove 22 in the piston and the outer face 18 of the piston and the corresponding face 19 of the cylinder head 11 may be upwardly inclined to direct the entering air upwards and to facilitate the whirling motion. The nozzle 20 may furnish two sprays, directed so as to cut the axis h at about 0.25h and 0.45h from the bottom, the two sprays being coincident in plan. The chamber 15 may be of heat-retaining material partly insulated from the remainder of the piston, for example a steel combustion chamber secured to an aluminium piston. In a twostroke opposed-piston engine with pistoncontrolled inlet and exhaust ports, the combustion chamber is formed by a cavity or cavities in the head of one or both pistons. The Provisional Specification states that the cavity in the piston may be of part-spheroidal, paraboloidal or other shape.
