Abstract

399,369. Oil engines. McLAREN, Ltd., J. & H. and McLAREN, H. J., Midland Engine Works, Leeds. Jan. 26, 1933, No. 2531. [Class 7 (iii).] A spherical air cell 5 is located in a cylinder head and provided with two or more passages 6 which initially diverge from the cell and finally converge towards one another on opposite sides of the stream of fuel injected from a sprayer 1 into a combustion chamber 2 of the shape shown in plan in Fig. 3. In an engine having several sprayers a separate cell for each sprayer may be provided ; alternatively, all the sprayers may be arranged symmetrically with respect to the outlet passages of a single air cell. The air cell may have a plurality of pairs of passages from which converging air streams are directed on to the fuel stream. The whole or part of the cell may be formed in a plug 5a insulated from the cylinder head by an air space 5b and plugs, insulated by air spaces, may be screwed into the passage 6.
