Abstract

521,954. Oil engines. LISTER & CO., Ltd., R. A., and THONGER, J. R. Nov. 29, 1938, No. 34685. [Class.7 (iii)] The combustion chamber is formed by a cavity 12 in the piston, extending from near one edge to near the opposite edge and smaller at one end than the other, the fuel injector 16 being arranged in the cylinder head so as to spray the fuel along the cavity from the smaller to the larger end, and so that the spray is substantially enveloped by a layer of air. In modifications, the edge 15 of the cavity may be concentric with the piston edge, or the cavity may be circular in plan with a small extension surrounding the injector 16. Subsidiary tapering cavities may be joined to the main cavity as indicated at 22. The inlet and exhaust valves 17 may be arranged substantially to one side of a diameter of the piston as shown, or may have their axes on the diameter. Cooling-fins may be provided on the cylinder head around the injector 16. The inlet valve may be shrouded to produce a whirling of the air.
