Cylinders receiving liquid fuel. - In an engine having means to rotate a body of air within the cylinder and in which the fuel is injected in the form of flat jets lying in a plane containing the cylinder axis, the combustion chamber is formed between two preferably hemispherical depressions 15, 16, on opposed pistons, or on the piston and cylinder head. Grooves 21 in the piston or cylinder head permit the injection of the fan-shaped jet, and the rotation of the air is secured bv tangential air inlet ports 22, which may also be upwardly inclined. The spherical walls of the combustion chamber are maintained at a red heat. In single acting single piston engines, a central fuel nozzle may be used, and in a double-acting engine, two piston rods are utilized, one on either side of the central spherical combustion chamber, as shown in Fig. 9.
