Abstract

374,994. Oil engines. THULIN, B., 3850, W. Washington Boulevard, Chicago, U.S.A. April 8, 1931, No. 10328. Convention date, April 11, 1930. [Class 7 (iii).] An offset ovoidal combustion chamber 4, Fig. 2 communicates with the cylinder through one or more restricted passages 5, the axis or axes of which is or are tangential both to the combustion chamber and the cylinder, the passage being located near one end of the combustion chamber. An injector 6 delivers fuel through a single orifice in the direction of the axis of symmetry of the combustion chamber, about which axis the air forced into the combustion chamber during the compression is caused to whirl by the tangential passage 5. The charge may be ignited by the heat of compression, by impinging on a hot surface 7, or by an electric ignition device. Fig. 2 shows the invention applied to a four-stroke engine in which the injector body 6 is directly cooled by placing it in the air admission passage. Fig. 5 shows a modified construction employing one valve only in the cylinder head, the injector in this construction being water-cooled.
