Abstract

299,807. Espholin, J. Nov. 1, 1927, [Convention date]. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel. - In engines in which liquid fuel is injected into the cylinder at the end of the compression stroke, the fuel is injected substantially at right angles to the cylinder axis and is spread by impact with a convex surface on the piston face, and takes a fan formation owing to the movement of the piston during the injection. In the case of a two-strokecycle engine, this surface may be the usual scavenging-air deflector, or, as shown, a tapering knob 2 extending from the deflector. The combustion chamber, in this case, is symmetrical about the cylinder axis, a cross-section being as shown, and the wall 13 are mounted on a heatinsulating ring 14, air spaces being left between the surfaces, and clamped by a ring 15. An electrically-heated coil 17 is provided for starting.
