Abstract

312,376. Hesselman, K. J. E. Nov. 26, 1927. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In an engine, of the kind described in Specifications 282,731 and 282,735, and in which liquid fuel is injected into an air mass rotating about the cylinder axis, or an axis parallel thereto, and the mixture is ignited by a timed igniter, the fuel pump has a variable stroke and delivery period so that the engine may work efficiently under different load conditions. The air is admitted by a valve 5 having a baffle 7 and if the arrangement of the fuel nozzle 4 and igniter 9 is, either (a) as in Fig. 2, or (6) as in Fig. 4, the corresponding control of the fuel pump provides that, in (a) it always concludes, and in (b) commences its stroke at a fixed point in the cycle. A projection 8 from the piston protects the igniter and prevents the mixture from contacting with the cool cylinder wall. The fuel pump may be actuated by an axially displaceable cam-shaft having differently-shaped cams.
