231,000. Invernairn, (W. Beardmore), Lord, and Chorlton, A. E. L. March 28, 1924. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel. - In an engine having a combustion chamber B formed in the cylinder head, a sleeve valve H controls the cylinder admission and exhaust ports E, F and G. The admission ports E, F form a ring around the cylinder; one of these ports F, admits hydrogen to the combustion chamber B, whereas the remainder, which are similar to E, supply air to the cylinder, at a point below the passage separating the cylinder from the combustion chamber. The air mixes with the hydrogen during the compression stroke, and the weak mixture thus formed is ignited by a sparking plug J. The combustion initiated in this way ignites liquid fuel injected through a nozzle D. Instead of using hydrogen, the ignition may be initiated by a hot plate, or by the heat of compression, or by a separate igniting fuel injected through a subsidiary nozzle.
