Abstract

Cylinders receiving liquid fuel. - In engines wherein ignition in a cylinder is normally effected by a small hot charge from a cylinder preceding it in igniting order, elongated combustion chambers 109 are used. A valve-controlled connection with. a companion cylinder 107 is formed in a short pipe; the charges in cylinder 107 are ignited by a flame from the cylinder 108. Liquid fuel is admitted to the combustion chamber through a nozzle 112 and air enters by a valve 114. When working with combustible mixture the valve 114 serves as an admission valve for the combustible charge. By suitably timing the valve 111 scavenging air from one cylinder may enter a companion cylinder, the passage of the air freeing the combustion chamber of burnt gases. At starting, ignition is effected by a sparking-plug 113 or by the heat of compression.
