Abstract

222,519. Daimler-Motoren-Ges. Sept. 28, 1923, [Convention date]. Cycles. - In engines in which ignition is effected by the heat of compression, the charge of combustible mixture consists of two or more portions, the temperature of spontaneous ignition of one or more of these portions being below that of the temperature due to compression, and above such temperature for the remainder. Each charge portion is dealt with by its own admission and exhaust valves. A cylinder and piston of two diameters may be employed, there being sufficient clearance between the smaller portions of the cylinder and piston to permit of flame transmission to the larger part of the cylinder, mixing of the unignited charges being avoided by using compression spaces of such sizes that compression varies uniformly therein.
