Abstract

152,950. Soc. Anon. des Etablissements Ballot. Oct. 25, 1919, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Compression engines.-In engines using heavy fuel and which ignite their charges by the heat of compression, hot burnt gases are added to the combustible mixtures when running at light loads. The burnt gases may be retained in the cylinder from a previous combustion, or they may be drawn in with a new charge. The method of working may be applied to engines of the twostroke or four-stroke cycle types and in a twostroke-cycle engine the burnt gases may be drawn into a compressing pump supplying scavenging air, or the cylinder may be incompletely scavenged by reducing the supply of scavenging air. In a four-stroke-cycle engine, the exhaust valve may be closed before the end of the exhaust stroke.
