Abstract

The engine has an auxiliary inlet valve (3) which admits a rich mixture into the precombustion chamber (5). This is connected by one passage (12) to an auxiliary ignition chamber (6) which is fitted with a conventional spark plug (8). A lean mixture is admitted through the main inlet passage (9) by the main inlet valve (2). This ignites in the main combustion chamber (4) after admission of the burning gases through the passage (11) from the precombustion chamber (5). The precombustion, pre ignition and main combustion chambers are all cast in the main cylinder head. This method of ignition gives a steadier flame speed than the normal method of ignition.
