Abstract

222,825. Renault, L. Oct. 2, 1923, [Convention date]. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-The products of an explosion in a chamber 11 atomize, vaporize and ignite a main charge of heavy fuel injected through nozzles 16. The explosion is obtained by charging the chamber 11 with a mixture of a permanent gas and air, or with a mixture from a carburettor, or with pure air into which is injected a light liquid fuel from a nozzle located within the chamber. In the case of a four-strokecycle engine, a combustible mixture or air is drawn into the chamber 11 through a valve corresponding to 17 during the suction stroke; in twostroke-cycle engines air is supplied from a scavenging air supply pipe 13 either to the carburettor 19 or direct to the chamber 11 through the valve 17. An electric or other igniter 15 is provided to ignite the auxiliary charge in the chamber 11.
