Abstract

438,769. Starting oil engines. BOSCH AKT.-GES., R., 4, Militõrstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany. March 14, 1935, No. 7987. Convention date, March 19, 1934. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (v)] To facilitate the starting of a self - ignition heavy-oil engine in which the air inlet opens directly into the engine cylinder or cylinders, each of which may have a precombustion chamber, heavy oil is vaporized in the air-inlet conduit and air is drawn in with the oil vapour on the suction stroke. Self-ignition of the mixture at the end of the compression stroke causes ignition of the working charge of heavy fuel introduced by the ordinary injection nozzles. Fig. 1 shows an engine in which the fuel is normally injected at e into a precombustion chamber d. At starting, fuel in a cup n in the induction pipe m is vaporized by means of an electric heating resistance o supplied with current from the battery p of a starting motor u. Fuel is supplied to the cup n by a hand pump s connected to the normal fuel-supply pipe h between an oil filter i and the injection pump f. In a modification, the starting-fuel cup is in a branch of the induction pipe which is shut off during normal running, and is supplied from a separate fuel container ; the heating coil is in series with an incandescent-wire igniter in the engine cylinder. In further modifications : (1) an annular vaporizing cup is suspended in a heatinsulated support in a pipe connection interposed in the induction pipe ; (2) a heating coil o, Fig. 5, in a branch of the induction pipe m is partly above the surface of the fuel in the cup n, air being drawn through ports 15 over the fuel surface and the mixture being ignited to effect partial combustion ; (3) the heating coil is wholly above the fuel in a cup such as n, Fig. 5, air being drawn through the fuel and the mixture being ignited by the coil.
