Abstract
679,516. Cylinders; cooling; starting. DUFAY, R. June 12, 1950 [July 1, 1949], No. 14591/50. Classes 7(ii), 7(iii) and 7(v) In a starting and operating means for an internal-combustion engine comprising a carburetter 5 and an auxiliary combustion chamber 9 communicating freely with cylinder 1 and fitted with a sparking plug and a heavy oil injector 8, the chamber 9 comprises an elongated body one end of which is connected to the engine cylinder 1, whilst the other end receives the injector 8, the jet from which is directed longitudinally along the chamber. The inner end of each chamber 9 is in the form of bi-conical nozzle or diffuser and the outer surface of the chamber incorporates cooling fins 18 dimensioned so that the injector may remain cold, the diffuser hot and the sparking plug at an intermediate temperature; the injector is additionally cooled by having a sleeve inserted between itself and the injector. Where it is desired to convert a petrol engine to a diesel engine the combustion chamber 9 is screwed into the sparking plug orifice; in the case of overhead sparking plug engines the diffuser may terminate in a perforated wall. Each cylinder 1 is provided at starting with petrol/air mixture supplied to the :intake manifold 2 in the usual way from an air intake 3 having a choke 4 and connected to the carburretter 5. In operation, the choke 4 is closed and some of the petrol/air mixture from the cylinder enters the chamber 9 where it is ignited by the sparking-plug, and when the chamber is sufficiently heated the petrol supply is cut off and the engine speed decreases and the pressure rises, whereby a regulator 7 brings the fuel pump 6 into operation so that the sparking plug now ignites the oil injected into the outer extremity of the chamber 9 by the injector 8. When the chamber reaches normal operating temperature the sparking plug is disconnected and. the engine functions by compression ignition. The sparking plug also permits warm starting or idling on heavy oil.
