Abstract

437,853. Oil engines. L'ORANGE, P., 130, Cannstatterstrasse, Feuerbach, Stuttgart, Germany. Dec. 7, 1934, No. 35167. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1933. [Class 7 (iii)] In an engine having a combustion chamber 2 separated from the cylinder 1 by a narrow passage 3, fuel is introduced during the suction or scavenging stroke of the piston into a small receptacle 6 and a portion is blown, by the increase in pressure in the cylinder during the compression stroke, into the chamber 2, where it mixes with air and is ignited. The increase in pressure in the combustion chamber blows the remainder of the fuel in the receptacle 6 into the cylinder. The fuel is supplied, in a twostroke engine by the pressure of the scavenging- air or exhaust gases in the cylinder or in a fourstroke engine by atmospheric pressure, to an inlet 22 and enters the receptacle past a valve 8, which is controlled by hand, by a governor, or by the pressure in the air-inlet pipe, and a non-return valve 9. The receptacle may be formed by one or more long narrow holes or by a hole of large bore provided with a filling-piece having a smooth or grooved wall carried by a screw 19. The injection orifice 5 leading into the cylinder is larger than the orifice 4 leading into the combustion chamber, which is preferably spherical and closed by a cover 15 made of refractory or catalytic material and heated at starting by an incandescent spiral 18. To increase the pressure difference between the cylinder and the combustion chamber towards the end of the stroke, the passage 3 may be throttled by an extension on the piston. Ignition may be promoted by traces of fuel entering the cylinder during the suction stroke and becoming ignited. The passage 3 may be formed by two conical frusta or by wide cylindrical outer parts connected by a narrow cylindrical middle part, or may be uniformly cylindrical.
