Classes 7(3) and 7(5) In a compression ignition engine having acompression ratio of from 10-14 to 1 for a bore of 2.5-3 inches there is provided a special starting means, other than the usual starting handle or motor, such as a glow plug or a pump 24 and a starting- fuel injector 22 for supplying volatile fuel to an engine during the starting period. To start the engine the handle 25 of the pump 24 is rotated to open a shut-offvalve 28 and then reciprocated to draw. in starting fuel, such as 10 per cent ether and 90 per cent fuel (by volume) or a mixture of ether and a cylinder head lubricant. through a non-return intake valve 23 and force it via a filter 32 and a conduit 33 to the injector 22 located in the inlet manifold 19. Upon pressure in conduit 33 reaching a given value it actuates a switch ,36 which completes a circuit to the starting motor 41. In a modification the engine is started by the use of the glow plug which opens into the combustion chamber, the latter being described in Specification 531,075. Specifications 556,666 and 723,617 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
