Abstract

[Also in Group XXVI] For crankcase compression, air is admitted by a duct d and rich mixture from a duct e via a piston conduit p opening tangentially into a fuelevaporation and piston-cooling cavity o shaped as a body of revolution, and which may have ribs extending thereinto from the piston head and be of heat-resistant material. The air is transferred to the cylinder space via one, or two diametrically opposed, ducts f, and the rich mixture via a port n and duct g, a deflector m directing the mixture into a chamber 1 and preventing its dilution with air until scavanging is effected, complete admixture not occurring until after ignition by a spark plug k. The engine may operate with benzine or higher boiling point fuels. The duct may house a carburetter, or air into which fuel has been injected may be led to the conduit p. Mixture may be kept from the piston skirt by an annular groove q, and a communicating axial piston groove (not shown) beneath it, leading combustion gases to the duct e during downward piston movement. The compression space may be small enough to effect self-ignition.
