Abstract

1,116,082. Supercharging L C. engines. TILLING-STEVENS Ltd, and D. KITCHEN. Sept. 13, 1965 [June 11,1964], No. 24347/64. Heading F1B. An I. C. engine, Fig. 7 (not shown), includes an exhaust driven turbocharger (62) delivering air or combustible mixture via an engine driven blower (61), e.g. a Roots blower, to the engine inlet manifold (64), and a return by-pass (65) is provided around the engine driven blower and includes a recirculation valve (66), which opens when the pressure difference across the latter blower exceeds a certain value. The valve, Fig. 6, which is of the hit-and-miss type, has its rotatable apertured plate 41 provided with an arm 48 engaged by a slot 49 in a piston 50, opposite ends of which are subjected to the pressures at the Roots blower inlet and outlet respectively by means not shown. A spring 54 urges plate 41 to its closed position, and rotation-limiting stops 56 are provided. Instead of spring 41, a spring may bear directly against one end of the piston. The end of the piston subjected to the pressure at the blower outlet may be of lesser area than the other end.
