Abstract
1,243,438. Exhaust silencers. P. J. CONLIN. July 8, 1969 [July 19, 1968], No.34392/69. Heading F1B. In an exhaust silencer comprising tangential inlet 6, Fig. 2, and outlet 7 on opposite sides of partition means 8, the latter and two portions 1 of the silencer casing are joined at their peripheries. The joint may comprise a single welded or brazed seam as shown at 15. Alternatively, it may be formed by spinning or rolling the peripheral edge of one of the casing portions 1 over the peripheral edges of the partition means and the other casing portion, Figs. 5, 7 and 11 (not shown), or the joint may be effected by a clamping band (30), Figs.12 and 13 (not shown), which permits relative angular adjustment between the casing portions 1. The partition means 8 may be tack-welded or brazed to a perforated tube 12 through which the exhaust gases pass from the inlet to the outlet. Alternatively, the tube 12 may be omitted, the means 8 then being extended axially to positions adjacent the end-walls of the silencer casing, Fig. 7 (not shown). The partition means may comprise a single funnel-shaped member arranged with its small end extending into the discharge portion of the silencer casing, Fig.15. (not shown). A circular mesh screen, or a circular mesh filter enclosing a catalyst, may be secured at its periphery by the joint.
