Abstract
1448301 Making silencers PAUL GlLLET GmbH 15 Jan 1974 [16 Jan 1973] 01859/74 Heading B3A [Also in Division F1] An exhaust silencer comprises a housing 11 closed except where it accommodates inlet and outlet ends 9 and 10 of a tube 3 which has curving bends 7, 8 to return the tube on itself twice to give three successively opposite directions of gas flow between the inlet and outlet ends. The tube is formed by S-shaped depressions in shells 1 and 2 which are joined together in a mirror symmetric arrangement. Baffle plates 18 (30), (31), Fig. 3 (not shown), formed with nozzles 20 may be provided in the straight portions 4, 5, 6 of tube 3. The baffle plates and also regions 13, 14, 15 may be perforated. The space between the tube 3 and the housing 11 may include sound absorbent material. Partitions 12, Figs. 1, 2 and (25), (26), Fig. 3 (not shown), divide the space into chambers, one or more of which may contain sound absorbent material, the other or others being empty. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a by-pass (32) is provided between curved portion (33) of tube 3 and outlet (34). Assembly.-The parts of the silencer can be connected together by spot welds 16 and the shells 1, 2 can be connected by piercing and turning over sheet metal flaps 17. Conventional edge flanging may also be used, particularly if surface-improved sheet metal is used. In Fig. 2b (not shown), the manner of attachment of baffle plates 18 and connection together of the shells 1 and 2 are illustrated.
