Abstract

971,334. Tube-type heat exchangers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 23, 1961 [March 2, 1960], No. 7468/60. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger comprises a closed casing having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet and containing a plurality of spaced-apart tubes of rectangular cross-section which extend in a direction inclined to the general direction of a fluid flowing through the vessel and over the tubes, the tubes having two of their parallel faces extending in planes parallel to the general flow direction of the external fluid. In the oil cooler shown the casing 1 is subdivided by a baffle 4. Oil to be cooled enters the casing at 5 and flows as a turbulent stream over the tubes to an outlet 6 for cooled oil. The tubes are connected to headers such that the cooling fluid entering at 13 makes a plurality of passes across the oil stream before being discharged at 12. A steam condenser using a similar arrangement of tubes for the cooling water is described (Fig. 4, not shown).
