Abstract
588,062. Air and gas cooling installations; heat - exchangers. GRISCOM - RUSSELL CO. Jan. 26, 1945, No. 2127. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1944. [Classes 64 (i) and 64 (iii)] A heat-exchanger for cooling fluids, e.g., oil or vapours in an oil refinery, comprises a metal casing 1 having at its central portion a bank of finned tubes 10, each bank consisting of a number of straight tubes whose ends are connected by U-bends 11, the fluid to be cooled passing from one header 9 to the other, through the tubes. Cooling air enters by the ducts 6, drawn in by the fans 2, and is cooled and washed by being sprayed with water from the jets 6<1>, behind which are baffles 7 to prevent water droplets entrapped in the air from reaching the tubes, to eliminate scaling. The cooled air then passes over the tubes through which the fluid is flowing, before passing out of the apparatus. The tubes in each bank may be staggered to increase the heat-exchange area. In a modification, the apparatus is horizontal instead of vertical, the air entering from the side and the fluid to be cooled from below the apparatus. U.S.A. Specification 1,886,403 is referred to.
