Abstract
1354607 Evaporative tubular heat exchangers BALTIMORE AIRCOIL CO Inc 28 June 1971 [29 June 1970 19 May 1971] 30271/71 Heading F4S Apparatus in which a fluid flowing through tubes of a heat exchanger 24 is cooled or condensed by evaporation of water sprayed over the outer surfaces of the tubes, consists of an air conduit 10, shown as diverging from a relatively narrow inlet portion 19, into which water (e.g. from spray heads 22, 23) is sprayed on to the inner surface of the conduit to induce an air flow through the conduit thereby carrying spray on to the tubes, the unevaporated portion of the water collecting in a sump from which, e.g. the water is recirculated via an outlet 37 to the spray heads; said conduit having an air outlet 43 discharging at a zone remote from the inlet. The conduit outlet 43 may, as shown, be located at a higher level than the inlet 18, or it may be at a point horizontally remote from the inlet (Fig. 6). and the air may be guided away from the outlet by baffles (68). The flow of water to the spray heads (and hence the induced air flow and cooling effect on the heat exchanger) may be regulated according to the ambient temperature. The heat exchanger itself acts as a mist eliminator but further mist eliminators 42 may be provided. The heat exchanger, Fig. 4, consists of a bank of sinuous tubes connected to inlet and outlet headers 25, 26. The tube runs are supported by pipes 33 extending between L-section members 34. A further support (not shown) may be provided at the centre of the tube runs.
