Classes 29 and 64(3) An evaporative cooler, e.g. a refrigerant condenser or gas or liquid cooler comprises an upper pre-cooler 2 and a lower main cooler 4 over which water is sprayed from nozzles 10, the fins on the pre-cooler serving to separate water from the air stream being drawn upwards through the coolers by fan 15. As shown, pre-cooler 2 comprises parallel-connected pipes the fins on which are alternately inclined in different directions. The coolers are mounted in a shaft the lower end of which forms a water reservoir 11 which cools a further cooler 17 for the refrigerant and from which water is supplied to nozzles 10 by pump 8. In a modification, the coolers each consist of two series-connected banks of tubes, alternate banks being inclined slightly in opposite directions and the fins being perpendicular to the axis of the tube. Water is sprayed over both banks of the main cooler and the cooling air is forced upwardly through the coolers by fans mounted at the bottom of the shaft.
