Abstract

1,129,631. Water distributing troughs in heat exchangers; refrigerating. BALTIMORE AIRCOIL CO. Inc. 11 Jan., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 1280/66. Headings F4H and F4K. [Also in Division B1] A water distributing trough for an evaporative heat exchanger includes a corrugated baffle wall held with the corrugation crests in contact with a side wall of the trough whereby water overflowing the edges of the trough is subdivided by the corrugations into separated streams which in use, are atomized as they break away from the trough, by an upwardly flowing air stream. In the preferred form shown, each limb of a corrugated U-shaped member 41 forms a baffle wall, the corrugations of the two limbs being relatively staggered. An arcuate baffle wall may be secured to the underside of the trough as described in Specification 1,129,632 to further subdivide the water streams. The trough may be used in an indirect contact evaporative cooler (Fig. 1) wherein the water flows over a tube coil (14) containing a refrigerant fluid to be cooled or condensed; the water being atomized and evaporated by an upwardly flowing air stream. The trough may also be used in a cooling tower (Fig. 2), where the, water is cooled by contact with an upwardly flowing air stream.
