Abstract

793,893. Tubular heat exchangers. COVENTRY RADIATOR & PRESSWORK CO., Ltd. Feb. 4, 1957 [April 5, 1956], No. 10402/56. Class 64(3) A tubular heat exchanger comprises a casing 10 containing a plurality of tubes 17a, 17b extending between headers 15, 16 which are held in position at the ends of of the casing by means of a hollow member 21, itself containing a group of tubes 24 over which a heat exchange fluid is passed. In the apparatus shown, lubricating oil and I.C. engine coolant liquid are both cooled by sea water. Lubricating oil flows through the centre group of tubes 24 and engine coolant flows around the tubes 17a, 17b in the casing 10. Sea water flows from an inlet 30, through the hollow member 21 and over tubes 24 to cool the oil flowing therein, thence through a port 29 in the member 21, to a compartment 27 of header 15. The sea water then flows through tubes 17a to return header 16 and thence through tubes 17b to compartment 28 of header 15 from which it discharged through an outlet 32. The heat exchanger may be used in connection with a fire pump engine in which case the coolant flowing over tubes 24 and through tubes 17a, 17b comprises water circulated by the fire pump.
