Abstract
787,332. Cooling radiators. SERCK RADIATORS, Ltd. Sept. 2. 1955 [Sept. 8, 1954], No. 25989/54. Class 64(3) An oil or other viscous fluid cooler comprising a housing c containing a group of parallel cooling tubes a over which the viscous fluid to be cooled is caused by means of baffles d. e to flow in a sinuous path from a fluid inlet f to a fluid outlet g both provided on the housing, includes at least two valve controlled by-passes h, i one of which can short circuit the whole or greater part of the normal viscous fluid flow path through the cooler between the inlet and the outlet and the other or others of which are arranged to short circuit a shorter or a series of progressively shorter portions of said flow path. In the oil cooler shown the by-pass h interconnects the respective spaces between the tube plates b and the first and last baffle plates as shown by the full line in Fig. 3, and the spring operated valve k is adapted to open at the highest oil pressure (i.e. on starting). As the stagnant oil in the cooler warms up slightly the warmer incoming oil finds its way to the space between the first and' second baffles and thence flows through the by-pass i and valve m to the outlet g, as shown by the dotted line iir Fig. 3. Ultimately when normal working conditions prevail and pressure is reduced, the valves k, m close and the incoming hot oil flows around the baffles and over the cooling tubes as indicated in Fig. 2. The coolant flowing through the tubes a may comprise air or water.
