Abstract
620,020. Tubular heat-exchangers. SERCK RADIATORS, Ltd., and UPTON, H. E. Jan. 2, 1947, No. 125. [Class 64(iii)] In a heat-exchanger, e.g. for cooling the jacket water and lubricating oil of internal combustion engines by sea, river or other water, a pair of tube assembdies 5, 6, each enclosed by a shell 9, 10, one of which is open to a tank 1 in which they are mounted, have separate headers 12, 13 for one adjacent pair of ends of the tube assemblies, and a header 15 common to the other ends, a part of the last-mentioned header 15 providing communication between one tube assembly 6 and a part of the other assembly 5, the other part of this header and one of the separate headers having connections 17, 14 for pipes for the cooling liquid, and separate pipe connections 20, 4 and 18, 19 being provided for conducting one liquid, e.g. engine jacket water, through one shell 9 and the tank 1, and the other liquid, e.g. lubricating oil, through the other shell 10. Engine jacket water enters the shell 9 through the port 20, flows around the tubes 5 to openings 21, and then through the outer casing to the outlet 4. When the engine is cold, the jacket water, instead of entering the port 20, may be passed through an inlet in the tank adjacent to the lower shell 10, so as to warm the lubricating oil initially. When normal running conditions have been reached, the by-pass is closed thermostatically.
