730,552. Tubular heat-exchangers.. BUCKLEY & TAYLOR, Ltd., and SIMONDS, F. May 17, 1951 [May 17, 1950], No. 12336/50. Class 64 (3). A heat-exchanger comprises two substantially cylindrical casings joined end to end, and tube supporting plates at opposite ends of each of the adjacent casings defining therewith coaxial, separate but adjacent chambers 13, 14 for the separate flow through each chamber of a fluid to be cooled, each chamber containing a bank of heat exchange tubes (e.g. 15, 18) and said banks communicating for the passage therethrough of a common coolant liquid, the tube plates 17, 20 at the meeting ends of the adjacent casings being secured thereto and being spaced apart to define a closed chamber 22 interconnecting the tube banks, the tube plates 16, 19 at the remote ends of the casings each being in slidable engagement with the inner cylindrical surface of its associated casing.and with a gland retaining ring attached thereto, hollow truncated header members 23, 25 being screwed one to each of these latter tube plates and having ports 24, 26 therein which are co-axial, for the passage of the common coolant to and from the tube banks. In the apparatus shown, lubricating oil and jacket water from the cooling system of a diesel engine are respectively cooled in the chambers 13, 14 by sea-water which flows from the inlet port 24, through the tubes 15 of oil cooling chamber 13 through chamber 22 and through the tubes 18 of the jacket-water cooling chamber 14 to the outlet port 26. Baffles are provided in each of the chambers 13, 14 to direct the respective fluids in a tortuous path over the tubes. Each chamber is provided with a valve controlled air release port 42 and with a valve controlled drainage port 41 and similar ports are provided in the header members 23, 25.
