Abstract

734,008. Tubular heat-exchangers. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. Jan. 27, 1953 [Feb. 5, 1952], No. 3046/52. Class 64 (3). A heat-exchanger comprises an assembly of fluid-carrying tubes extending between similar tube plates, resilient sealing means being provided between the periphery of each tube plate and a casing enclosing the tube assembly, the casing comprising a one-piece body part having a compartment adapted to receive the tube assembly, the said compartment being closed at one end and having its open end closed by a cover, the compartment having openings on opposite sides thereof for the external fluid to flow over the tubes, and at each end a seating providing a clearance fit for the respective tube plate. In the form shown, four tube assemblies 11, each in its own compartment, are arranged within the casing 10 and engine-fuel flows in series through the tubes 12 of successive groups from an inlet port 16 to an outlet port 17 whilst hot oil enters the casing 10 through an opening 19 and flows successively through each compartment by way of openings 50 in side walls thereof, over the tubes to an outlet opening 20 from the casing. The open end of the casing 10 is closed by a cover 14. Each tube plate 13 is grooved to receive two resilient sealing members 28 (see Fig. 8) which are spaced apart to provide a space to receive leakage fluid, means being provided to conduct any such leakage fluid out of the apparatus. Fins on adjacent tubes intermesh as shown.
