Abstract
568,937. Tubular heat-exchangers. WOODALL-DUCKHAM (1920), Ltd., and MILLENER, W. H. Aug. 27, 1943, No. 13974. [Class 64 (iii)] Tubular heat-exchange apparatus, e.g., a condenser, in which each of the fluids makes at least two parallel passes through the apparatus, comprises a cylindrical shell 10 permanently closed at one end and open at the other to receive a tube assembly incorporating at least two tube banks between inlet and outlet manifolds 13, 14 and a floating head 15, a pass plate formed of two relatively movable and separable parts 17, 17a, or 18, 18a, inserted between the tube banks and entirely unattached to the tube assembly, arcuate baffles 25 in space between the tubes and the shell at intervals along the length of the tubes, each arcuate baffle being connected at one end to a part of a pass plate and supported at the other adjacent to the edge of a pass plate, and means to press the two parts of the pass plate into contact with the shell when in the tube assembly, pass plate and arcuate baffles have been inserted, whilst maintaining a seal between the two parts . of the pass plate. In the form shown there are two pass plates or partitions composed in all of four flanged plates, 17, 17a, 18, 18a. The two plates of each pair are connected by bolts such as 19, 20 engaging in nuts such as 19a fixed to one plate of each pair. Tightening of the bolts, by the insertion of a tool through apertures in the casing when the tube assembly and partitions have been inserted, causes the pair of plates so drawn together to press the outer edges of the other pair of plates against the casing. Baffles 24 restrict the flow of fluid between the plates and the tubes. Openings 21 are provided in the plates for the passage of fluid from one side of each plate to the other. The bolts and nuts may be replaced by open L-shaped springs each attached at one end to :a baffle 24 and at the other pressing against the adjacent surface of another partition plate. In a double-pass apparatus, the single partition is composed of a large flanged plate which extends nearly across the casing, and a small auxiliary piece which closes the gap between the flanged end of the plate and the casing. The auxiliary piece may be of L-section and connected to the large plate by bolts engaging in nuts fixed to the flange. Alternatively, the outer edge of the auxiliary piece may be urged away from the large plate by a spring. Semi-annular baffles are attached to the large plate and its auxiliary piece.
