Abstract
1393507 Radiators for aircraft UNITED AIRCRAFT PRODUCTS Inc 4 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 21296/73 Headings F4S and F4U A surface cooler 11 mounted on the structural surface 10 of an aircraft, e.g. a pod suspended from a wing, comprises an assembly of spaced apart arcuate plates 10a, 16, 17 arranged to define first and second passages respectively for the flow of cooling air and liquid to be cooled. The air passage is open ended and contains a corrugated fin strip 13, cooling air being forced through this passage by the movement of the aircraft. An arrangement of strips 34, 35, 36 and 37 and inclined baffle plate 38 located at the leading end of the cooler serves to guide high energy cooling air into the inlet end of the air passage while diverting the relatively low energy air adjacent the surface 10 away from the inlet. The flow passage for liquid to be cooled is closed at its ends by suitably slotted tubular manifolds 22 and 23 and contains a corrugated fin strip 19. Liquid to be cooled from an internal heat transfer system within the pod is passed through the surface cooler and is then led back into the pod for reuse. Means to vent a third fluid, e.g. steam from a water boiler in the pod, is mounted at the trailing end of the cooler. The means comprises a pair of diverging plates (43 and 44, Fig. 6, not shown) defining a negative pressure chamber (45) which communicates with the interior of the pod via an opening (55, Fig. 7, not shown).
