In a heat exchanger comprising spaced, parallel, flat, hollow elements 9 arranged in a casing 1, which is provided laterally with inlet and outlet means for the fluid circulating around the elements 9, are disposed filling members 23, e.g. plate members, at the ends of channels formed between adjacent elements, the members extending further along the side of the casing opposite the inlet and outlet means. In the form shown, a bank of elements is contained within an open-ended inner casing 5 arranged in the casing 1. The filling members 23 are formed so as to prevent turbulence in the fluid entering and leaving the casing 1 by way of inlet and outlet ducts 3, 4. The inner casing serves to guide the fluid along the elements 9 and flanges 6 prevent flow between the inner and outer casings 1 and 5. The elements 9 and frames 11 and 12 form a unit which after removal of flanges 21 and 17, may be removed from casing 1 for inspection and cleaning. Each element 9 is formed from two plates which have rib-like depressions 22, and are placed opposite each other. Hence longitudinal internal channels are formed between the plates and the ribs 22. Also, button-shaped depressions may be additionally provided in the plates so as to protrude in the opposite direction to the longitudinal ribs to form spacing means between the elements. The plates may be slightly rounded instead of flat between adjacent ribs 22.
