Abstract

955,546. Tube heat exchangers. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. May 16, 1960, No. 17184/60. Heading F4S. In a shell and tube heat exchanger, the tubes 15 are provided with transverse fins 25 so arranged as to cause the shell side fluid to flow across the tubes and also along the tubes substantially at right-angles to the fins, and at the same time to progress in the general direction from one end of the shell to the other. The invention is said to be applicable to apparatus employing straight tubes (as shown) or U-tubes. In the form shown, the fins are omitted from parts of certain tubes to provide sections where the shell-side fluid changes direction in following a sinuous path between the shell inlet 31 and outlet 33. The fluid is guided from one section to another by baffles 40 formed by blocking the spaces between certain fins using spacers 42 (Figs. 4 and 6). Baffles 40 include angle members 45 (see Fig. 6) which extend to the shell and prevent by-passing of the tubes by the shell-side fluid. The baffles 40 also act as tube supports and may be interconnected by tie-rods (not shown) passing through the angle members 45.
