Abstract

1,117,844. Bulk-fluid heat exchangers. M. B. GARDNER CO. Inc. 1 March, 1966, No. 8808/66. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger is immersed in a liquid or gaseous fluid which is contained in a chamber 10 and caused to pass through the heat exchanger by thermosyphon action. The heat exchanger comprises an outer shell open at its ends and containing an assembly of tubes through or around which flows a heating or cooling medium. One end of the shell is higher in the chamber 10, than the other to provide the thermosyphon flow; e.g. the shell may be inclined as shown or arranged with a horizontal inlet portion or portions and an upright or inclined outlet portion (Figs. 11-14). The chamber fluid is withdrawn through an outlet 30 intermediate the ends of the shell, and during such fluid withdrawal the chamber fluid enters the shell at both ends thereof. The heat exchanger tubes may be arranged around a central core tube which at an intermediate point in its length, defines an outlet manifold for the chamber fluid (Figs. 3-6). The heat exchanger tubes may be provided with longitudinal internal and/or external fins (Figs. 6, 7 and 10).
