Abstract
1,245,976. Tubular heat exchangers. DELTA THERMAL TECHNOLOGY Ltd. 16 July, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 17996/68. Heading F4S. In a shell and tube type heat exchanger D, air passing through a plurality of tubes 1 extending between tube sheets 2 can be used either to cool or to heat a fluid, e.g. oil, which is passed through the cylindrical shell 3 between an inlet 4 and an outlet 5. Baffles 6 are located within the shell to create turbulence in the fluid flow; tie rods 6<SP>1</SP> and spacers co-operate with the tubes and baffles. As shown an axial flow fan driven by a motor 7 is located to provide a forced air' flow through the tubes. Alternatively the fan may be located downstream of the exchanger D to provide an induced air flow. When the air is to be used for heating a cold fluid, a heating coil is included upstream of the exchanger to heat the air. In a modified embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the shell comprises two cylindrical portions (12, 13) in sealed sliding telescoping relation. This enables the nest of tubes together with the tube sheets to be easily removed from the shell to facilitate inspection and cleaning. When the heat exchanger is used to cool a fluid, the degree of cooling may be controlled according to the temperature of the fluid leaving the shell by recirculating part of the outflow air back to the inlet side of the exchanger to admix with the inlet air (see Fig. 6, not shown); an arrangement of two exchangers operating in parallel may be utilized (Fig. 6).
