Abstract

1,176,473. Heat exchangers; boilers. E. H. PRIEST and G. M. PRIEST. 30 Jan., 1967 [31 Jan., 1966], No. 4102/66. Headings F4A and F4S. A double pass heat exchanger comprises annuli of extruded trapezoidal-shaped heat exchange elements 2, 3 forming a group of ducts for a fluid to be heated surrounding and defining a centrally disposed duct for the passage of combustion gases. As shown, combustion gases from a burner orifice 1 pass along the central duct and return through two rings of tubes 8 disposed within the elements 2, 3 respectively to exit through a stack 12. The fluid to be heated, e.g. heat transfer liquid, water, or a gas, flows through the outer and inner annuli of elements 3 and 2 countercurrent to the flow of combustion gases. The elements 2, which alternatively may be of reactangular cross-section, are provided with integrally formed longitudinal fins 5. In an alternative arrangement the heat exchange elements 3 are omitted and the elements 2 are replaced by substantially tubular elements (14, Fig. 3, not shown). Each element (14) is provided with internal fins (17), and external flanges (18) on to which adjacent elements are welded. All the heat exchange surfaces may be finned, if required, to improve efficiency.
