Abstract
1,176,474. Fluid heaters. E. H. PRIEST and G. M. PRIEST. 9 Nov., 1966 [31 Jan., 1966], No. 4103/66. Addition to 1,018,843. Headings F4A and F4S. The heat exchangers described in Specification 1,018,843 and consisting of a group of ducts for one fluid to be heated surrounding a central passageway for another fluid are modified such that the fluid to be heated is arranged to flow in opposite directions in each pair of adjacent ducts, thus producing an extended flow path. As shown, combustion gases from the burner unit 6 pass up a central tube 1 having longitudinal fins 2, down longitudinal tubes 11 which are disposed within arcuate ducts 7, 8, 9, 10, through a preheater 5 and out through a stack 12. The fluid to be heated first passes through the preheater 5 and is then pumped through the arcuate ducts entering at duct 7 and leaving at duct 10. Radial plates 3 welded to an outer casing 4 and the central tube 1 define the flow path such that fluid flows in opposite directions in each pair of adjacent ducts. The tubes 11 may be internally or externally finned. In a heat exchanger having a larger number of ducts, the fluid to be heated may flow in one direction through a group (e.g. two or three) of adjacent ducts and in the opposite direction in another group of adjacent ducts.
