Abstract

1421216 Tubular heat exchangers SAAB-SCANIA AB 7 Sept 1973 [13 Sept 1972] 42267/73 Heading F4S A heat exchanger comprises spaced-apart strip fins 13 which extend through and beyond the cross-section of heat exchange tubes 11 (i.e. both internally and externally of the tubes), the tube cross-section having an internal dimension wider than the fin width so that flow passages are formed on each side thereof for the internal fluid 3 which in use flows first through the tube portion 16 and then between the fins to the tube portion 17, whilst the external fluid 6 flows over the tubes between the external parts of the fins. The intention is that heat transfer between the fluids 3 and 6 is mainly via the fins 13 which are of metal foil whilst the tubes themselves can be made of a plastics material. Preferably the aforesaid flow passages provided by the tube portions 16 and 17 are of gradually decreasing and increasing cross-sectional area respectively in the direction of fluid flow, as indicated in Fig. 4. The tubes 11 in one form (Figs. 8, 9) comprise ring-shaped elements (28) glued together with a fin 13 sandwiched between adjacent rings. Fig. 5 shows another form of tube in which the fin elements 13 shaped as shown are glued together to form the central zone of the tube which is completed by the addition of trough-shaped parts 20, 21. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement (in plan) of the finned tubes 11 in a liquid-cooling radiator. The tubes are horizontal and vertically extending banks of the tubes (Fig. 10) extend between upright headers, e.g. 7, 8, 10 which are of tapering cross-section in the direction of liquid flow therethrough. The upright headers communicate at one of their ends with horizontal main headers (4, 5, Figs. 2 and 3).
